Endophytic bacteria are bacteria in plant tissues that can produce secondary metabolites that similar to bioactive substances as their host plants. This study aims to isolate and characterized endophytic bacteria in the roots of kecombrang (Etlingera elatior (Jack) R. M. Smith) and their ability to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus. The research was carried out using a quantitative descriptive method with the stages of sample preparation, sterilization of tools and media, isolation, characterization and testing. The results showed that three isolates of endophytic bacteria were isolated from kecombrang roots, namely AK1, AK2, and AK3 the isolates were cocci, gram-positive bacteria. Based on the inhibition test showed that the endophytic bacteria were antagonist to Staphylococcus aureus. Isolates with code AK1 had an inhibitory of 9.6 mm, AK2 had the lowest inhibitory of 6.6 mm and AK3 had the greatest inhibitory of 13.5 mm.en_US
