Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is a plant that is used as an alternative medicine, starting from the roots, stems, leaves and fruit. Because it is known to contain tannin compounds that have antibacterial activity against several types of phatogenic bacteria such as Shigella, Salmonella thypii, and Eschericia coli. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of papaya seed extract in inhibiting the growth of Shigella dysentriae. This research is an experimental study using a one- factor completely randomized design method and diffusion method. The concentration of papaya seed extract used was 10%, 20%, 30%, 40% with 5 repetitions. The results showed that the papaya seed extract with each concentration was able to inhibit the growth of Shigella dysentriae bacteria. There was no significant difference between the concentrations of 40%, 30%, and 20%, so that the concentration of 20% was the most effective concentration.
